    Course Description:    This course provides both the theoretical constructs and the practical applications involved in the responsibilities exclusive to district-level administrative leadership. These include the macro-level applications of budgeting, staff development, community and external stakeholder relations, and advocacy. This course will also guide students in developing the initial components of a district-wide action research project focused on central office functions.  
    Learning Objectives:  
    • Explain the roles and functions of the school district superintendent and other senior administrators in the operation of a PreK–12 school district  
    • Analyze the organizational structure of a PreK–12 school district and its relationship with federal and state rules and regulations   
    • Critique current models of school district governance (i.e., school board structure and executive leadership) in operating schools with a view to maximizing student learning and conducting school business efficiently  
    • Assess the leadership requirements of the role of superintendent and senior administrator and their responsibilities and qualifications

    Course Description:   This course provides an overview of the major areas of responsibilities of the school business administrator. Financial support for public schools from local, state, and federal governments will be emphasized. Fiscal planning, budgeting, plant management, accounting and purchasing procedures, distribution of supplies and services, transportation and food service will be examined. The course will underscore the crucial role of the school business administrator as a key member of the district’s leadership team. The course is also designed to provide students with an understanding of how the school business administrator can facilitate educational decision-making, thereby having a positive effect on student learning.

    Course Description:    This course provides an overview of the myriad of duties and responsibilities of the office of human resources. Through individual assignments and small/large group experiences, candidates gain the knowledge, skills, and attributes involved in leading both professional and non-professional staff. Specific case studies are presented, guest speakers are invited to present, and specific theories and philosophies are studied. Matters having to do with leadership and organization of school personnel will be addressed. Exploration of topics such as recruitment and selection; induction; professional development; supervision and evaluation; discipline and dismissal; the work environment; compensation and benefits; administering employee contracts; and legal issues in personnel management will be included.

    Course Description:   This course is designed to study multicultural education and its link to school leadership, cultural understanding, and critical problems related to the organization of schools through the lens of human behavior. A focus is on the preparation of administrators to transform schools by understanding theoretical, sociological, political, and historical elements as they relate to ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, gender, exceptionality, language, religion, and sexual orientation. In preparation for work in an increasingly diverse world, students in this course will engage in personal, professional, and organizational reflection.

The course content provides the student with the historical and operational perspectives of planning in modern organizations.  Focus is on the development of planning, implementation, and leadership skills needed to direct strategic decision-making within educational settings.
