This course presents an overview of key issues and problem areas in the fast-developing law of higher education. Topics include student and faculty rights and responsibilities, academic freedom, governance, affirmative action, campus security, collective bargaining and labor relations, to name just a few. Students will review important court cases that establish a framework for decision-making and will also participate in problem-solving exercises.
Use legal terminology, procedures, and doctrines related to higher education
Identify situations and issues that require the advice of legal counsel
Explain the role of legal counsel in a college or university
Describe the legal status and rights of students, faculty, administrators and governing boards
Define and develop administrative practices, procedures and policies that are based on knowledge of the law, regulations and court decisions
Understand how to use preventive strategies to avoid or be prepared for legal action
